What is Australia Permanent Residency?
Australian Permanent Residency is an immigration status allowing foreign nationals to live, work, and study anywhere in Australia indefinitely. PR holders have access to Medicare (Australia's public healthcare), subsidized education, and social security benefits.
After holding PR for a period and meeting residency requirements, you can apply for Australian citizenship — one of the most powerful passports in the world with visa-free access to 185+ countries.
Why Australia PR is a Life-Changing Decision

Main Visa Subclasses for Australia PR
Australia uses a SkillSelect system where you submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and receive invitations based on your points score. Below are the main skilled migration visas:
Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)
No state sponsorship or employer required. Purely points-based and highly competitive. Best for candidates with very high points (typically 85+). Valid for 5 years with pathway to citizenship.
Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)
Requires a nomination from an Australian state or territory government. Nomination adds 5 points to your score. You must commit to living and working in the nominating state for at least 2 years.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)
A provisional 5-year visa for regional Australia. Nominated by a state/territory or sponsored by an eligible relative. After 3 years, you can apply for the permanent Subclass 191 visa.
Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)
Employer-sponsored permanent visa. Requires an Australian employer to nominate you for a full-time position. Available via Direct Entry or Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream.
Permanent Residence (Regional) Visa (Subclass 191)
Permanent visa for holders of a 491 or 494 visa who have lived and worked in regional Australia for 3 years and earned above the required income threshold.
How the Australia Points Test Works
To be invited to apply for a Subclass 189 or 190 visa, you need a minimum of 65 points. The more points, the faster the invitation. Here's a summary of how points are calculated:
How Australia PR Works — Step by Step
Australia's SkillSelect process is competitive but transparent. Here's exactly how the journey from India to Australian PR unfolds:
Points Assessment & Eligibility Check
Our consultants calculate your points score and assess your occupation against the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or Short-term Skills Occupation List (STSOL).
Skills Assessment
Your qualifications and work experience must be assessed by a relevant Australian skills assessing authority (e.g., Engineers Australia, VETASSESS, ANMAC for nurses, ACS for IT professionals).
English Language Test
Take IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT. For Competent English (minimum), you need IELTS 6.0 in each band. For Proficient (7.0+) or Superior (8.0+) you earn bonus points.
Submit Expression of Interest (EOI) on SkillSelect
Create an account on the Department of Home Affairs SkillSelect portal and submit your EOI. You'll be ranked among all candidates with similar points and invited from highest to lowest scores.
State Nomination (for 190 / 491 applicants)
Apply separately to state/territory governments for nomination. Each state has its own occupation lists and requirements. Nomination adds critical points to your score.
Receive Invitation to Apply (ITA)
When your EOI score meets the draw cutoff, you receive an ITA from the Department of Home Affairs. You have 60 days to lodge a complete visa application online.
Lodge Visa Application + Medical & Police Checks
Complete health examinations at a designated panel physician, provide police clearance certificates from all countries where you've lived 12+ months, and upload all supporting documents.
Visa Grant & Activate Your PR 🎉
Once approved, your visa is granted with a travel facility. You must make your first entry into Australia before the activation date. After landing, your PR is active and you can live freely in Australia!
